Chili con carne is one of the most famous dishes of the Mexican cuisine. It basically means "hot peppers (chili) with meat (carne)”. It is a quite spicy and aromatic food, will surely become one of your favorite recipes if you are a fan of spicy dishes. An early recipe of chili con carne dates back to 1850 and it was using dried meat and dried chili peppers. Chili con carne is nowadays the official dish of Texas, USA. The quantities of the hot spices used in this recipe can change depending on the preferences.


Hot, Aromatic

  • 500 gr minced beef, non-fat
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • ¼ tsp dried garlic Sunspices
  • 100 ml red wine
  • 400 gr canned grated tomatoes
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tsp dried oregano Sunspices
  • 1-2 tsp hot crushed red peppers Sunspices
  • 1 cinnamon stick Sunspices
  • 1 tsp cumin Sunspices
  • 1 tsp coriander Sunspices
  • 1 tsp sweet paprika Sunspices
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 beef broth cube
  • Salt and black pepper
  • 400 gr canned red kidney beans


  1. In a large pot, we heat the olive oil on medium heat. When heated, we add the onion and we sauté it until it gets a nice color and starts caramelizing. We add the tomato paste and we sauté it for 2-3 minutes to make the food taste better.
  2. We add the minced beef and we break it using a spoon. We want the minced beef to get a nice color. We add the wine and we wait for it to evaporate, about 3 minutes. We add the grated tomatoes, the garlic, the oregano, the crushed red peppers, the cinnamon stick, the cumin, the coriander, the paprika, the sugar, the beef broth cube and we season with salt and pepper. We lower the heat, we cover the pot with a lid and we cook for 45’-1 hour until the sauce thickens. We add the strained red kidney beans and we cook for another 10 minutes. We remove from the heat and let the food rest for 5 minutes so that the different aroma and flavor compounds mingle together.
  3. We serve with tortillas, rice, yogurt and avocado as side dishes.

    Tips & information about the recipe
    In order to make the dish more colorful and lighter, you can use, if you want, red and green peppers and chopped celery and add them to the minced beef along with the tomatoes.

Για να γίνει πιο χρωματιστό αλλά και πιο ανάλαφρο το πιάτο, προσθέτετε αν θέλετε κόκινες και πράσινες πιπεριές και σέλερυ ψιλοκομμένο και τα ρίχνετε στον κιμά μαζί με την τομάτα.
